...Here's what's going through my head with the bottom art.
First picture: [phone ringing sound effect] *ring* *ring* *ri-* Second picture: [explosion sound effect (obviously)] *BOOM!* Third picture: We're sorry, the brain you've attempted to use is not available. Please wait and try to form a coherent thought again later.
omigod. I was actually thinking about how Kuno and Drakken pretty much dress the same, so then I realized Drakken has Shego, Kuno has Nibiki; neither couple gets together during their series' but both pairing are hinted at by the authors. both women have deep voices, love money, and are manipulative...interesting parallels
Love this!! I've been a fan of KP forever and I always felt Drakken and Shego were more than villain-sidekick team. (ok, so maybe the seven year old me didn't think about something like this, but anyways...) I just rediscovered the show and I'm glad my return to KP fandom included your art, cause it's great!
omg another classic of Shego naughtyness! And typical "O____o" Drakken-reaction too!
My gawd, I just love every single D/S pic on your gallery! Where have you been all this time? I notice you only joined dA 3 weeks ago! Did you just get started on the series only recently as well? Anyway, it's really nice to see new additions to the KP fandom (especially when it comes to D/S) Must fave this one too, of course!
Long story short on how I came to be a KP fan, I was watching Toy Story 3 fan videos on youtube (NERD ALERT!) and there were some KP Ron and Kim ones alongside that I clicked on, and here I am. As for where I've been... Hiding out in my basement suite with my cats. Ha ha, and working all the freaking time- the ainmation industry has some grueling hours. My job right now is very managable so I have the time to indugle in D/S. It's just such a solid series and the art is so appealing, I'm surprised myself that I wasn't into it sooner.
Fascinating story! And yeah, I know what you mean. I would say I joined the KP fandom just in the middle of the series' timeline. It was around year 2004 if i recall correctly... And it was kinda unexpected too. The first time ever I saw anything KP related, was an advertisement for the KP Game Boy game "Revenge of Monkey Fist", which I saw on a Disney Adventures magazine. Then during one trip to the USA, my sister managed to watch "A Very Possible Christmas" on tv and told me how funny and cool the show was... I believe it was during that same trip that I saw yet another Disney Adventures magazine with a little KP comic on it. First thing I thought when I saw Drakken was "the blue guy looks cool, I kinda like him"...
So when I got back home, I happened to watch part of a KP marathon that finished with the premiere of "A Sitch in Time" for Disney Channel Latin America. Needless to say, I instantly fell in love with Drakken! So I continued to follow the series.
Wow, that was a long rant! But yeah, that's how I got into KP! It has always been Drakken, from the begining ^_____^
I have to confess that Drakken wasn't the instant draw to KP for me. Ron was. (ducks for cover) Well, kinda...It was more I was impressed that a TV cartoon would do any sort of relationship development between two chracters. Let alone have them kiss! Usually it's all hints with nothing really resolving. But I do remember loving Shego- She's so damn bad ass. I think I would catch glimpses of KP when I would go home for Chirstmas. I didn't have a TV when it was airing. Ah the student days...don't want 'em back. But once I started watching the series, it was all Drakken and no going back! Plus the animation is so well done, the fight scenes/ action sequences are so excellent. It's just a quality show all round.
Ahaha, I wasn't even thinking about Kuno until I read the description, but yeah, that's totally Kuno.
Upperclassman Dr. Drakken, age 42, otherwise known as The Blue Thunder!
Heh, yeah, this isn't the first time I've thought about Kuno in relation to Dr. D...as well as Shego in relation to Nabiki. If I wasn't so lazy/such a crappy artist, I would've drawn Kuno/Nabiki dressed as D/S years ago.
Blue-clad megalomaniac who's prone to ranting...cynical mercenary who loves messing with the megalomaniac's head...
The likenesses are only superficial, though...as Kuno's a lecherous moron and Drakken's a non-lecherous genius, and as Shego's not only much more passionate and temperamental than Nabiki, but would also never sell her grandmother's soul for ten yen... >___>
They're relationship is a little more like Akane and Ranma I think. The bickering as flirting? It's true the resemblance to Kuno and Nabkik isn't more than superficial, but it's a fun comparison. I just love how the Mt.Fuji blow up is almost Kuno's trademark reaction when girl Ranma gets saucy with him. Never fails to make me laugh.
Oh, totally. The Nabiki/Kuno and D/S comparison still tickles me. There are just enough similarities to make it funny.
Kuno's such a bizarre guy (uh, but then again, pretty much everyone's bizarre in Ranma 1/2 ) that you kinda have to wonder what became of him in the end. I know Nabiki/Kuno isn't canon, so I'm guessing at least he got to keep his money.
And ya know Nabiki's gonna come out on top no matter what she decides to make of herself in the world, the clever little minx.
I also find it funny that Takahashi deemed Kuno, Nabiki and Happosai the main "villains"...or so I've read.
Hmmm...except for the bickering, the complete inability to express their softer feelings and the fact that they always get each other out of sticky situations, I don't really see much resemblance between the characters (Ran/Ak + D/S)-- unless you only meant how they relate to each other and not so much of anything else.
Heh, I still love Ranma 1/2 after all these years. It's just so bizarre and hilarious, and I love the character designs-- plot and storywise, though, it kinda tends to fall apart, especially later on, and there's little to no character/relationship progress...but maybe Takahashi hadn't intended much of any.
It's one of the few things where I ship non-canon couples. >___>
Kuno, Nabiki and Happosai are the main villains? Ha ha! I hadn't heard that! Happosai for sure, and I guess Nabiki is very self serving. Kuno's just a downright freak.
As for the Ranma Akane similarity,I did mean how they relate to each other, because you're right they don't have many other parallels. But I love how Ranma is all big ego and bluster and then gets as awkward a 12 year old when Akane gets "cute"
I don't think Takahashi meant there to be much character development, it was billed as a Shonen manga after all. I think the comedy and wackiness was always supposed to be the emphasis. I still enjoy it too, after all these years. It was the first comic I ever read that made me laugh so hard I couldn't breathe. And it's probably been one of my biggest influences.
Yeah, I heard it years ago. I'll have to Google my ass off to confirm it as a fact, though.
There's a bunch of Takahashi interviews here ([link]), if you wanna read them. Maybe it's there. I haven't read them yet; will do so now, I think.
Yeah, the comedy was def the main focus, it was just a bit puzzling at times since the tone of the manga started out somewhat differently. Ah well, I think almost every show/comic/book whatever has that to deal with. My pet peeve about Takahashi's works is that she has a tendency to just add new characters (a LOT of new characters) all the time instead of developing the ones she's already got, but yeah, I guess it's for the Rule of Funny.
She's still a god. I constantly find myself wanting to refer to her as "Takahashi-sama", even though it's pretty dorky.
Oh yeah-- I can't really mention any concrete examples of how, but Ranma 1/2 has been and will continue to be one of my greatest influences as well.
For one thing, I can only dream of ever creating a plot device as ingenious as the Enternally Lost Ryoga, who can pop up anywhere and anytime-- and without the author having to ever give a real explanation of why he's there. The readers just accept it.
Ryoga is his own plot device! Ha! I just love him.
It's true she does add a few too many new characters for my taste- tho' thats such a small problem for me since I enjoy the series so much. I do find that I re-read the first half of the manga more than the second, for that reason. The funniest stories for me are usually the ones with the main circle of characters involved. And it's a fairly big circle to begin with.
Yeah, my fave stuff is still Ryoga vs. Ukyo, Ryoga dating Akane to make Ranma jealous and Ukyo going on a date with Ranma, the three-legged obstacle race (especially since I'm a pathetic Ryoga/Ukyo buff) and the early stuff with Ranma/Akane; like the ice skating story. Oh, and the Hiryuu Shoten Ha story arch, that's alotta fun.
Oh, and anything with Nabiki is usually a hoot, as is anything with Kuno.
Personally I'm a little tired of Dr. D being portrayed reacting in such a way in this type of situation, as I think it would be more in character of him to be somewhat confused as to what's going on. He's bot the 'typical male' type, after all.
Very lovely drawn of course, and another one to add to favourites.
Good point. I like to think of them as an established couple in this scene, so I don't think he'd be too confused anymore. Mostly I just wanted to draw him with the Kuno style Mt. Fuji explosion because it amuses me.
Thank you! Actually I liked your suggestion so much I'm going to make you an alternate ending for next week And then it got me thinking about how many different ways the senario could end, it was really fun.
